Kyle's Blog Day 10

I may have missed a few blogs but why not right? :P Anyways, on day one I was really hopeful to learn a lot about film making/editing and some marine animals. In the end I ended up learning more than that. I was able to see the collections for multiple types of animals and be able to work with the Academy's Visual Studio. I really enjoyed the small size of the class and the age group, which was not full of kids much older or much younger. If I could, I would do this program again.

Last Day Blog Alex

In the beginning of the camp I was excepting to do a lot less behind the scenes and more video making.  I am happy that I got to see all the collections of mammals, reptiles, and fish.  the hardest part of the program was making the video because we had to find pictures that were good images with no logos or signatures.

My favorite thing about the camp was going in to the viz studio. Something  I enjoyed seeing the last reef movie. I loved being able to explore the academy. Something I would have liked better is if my team would help instead of playing games the whole time. Another thing I would have liked better is if we had a longer break. I think the size of the group was good I think it would be better if the teams were even because the other team had more work to do. I loved meeting new people and I liked meeting all the teachers that helped with technology and the tours. I thought it was a really cool experience seeing a dead sailfish. I think that next time the age range should be people going into 7th-8th grade.

maxwell's last bloooooooooooooooooooog

I came here loooooooooking to make mooooovies about animals. I left here by making a moooooooovie about pollution. YAY! I liked  making moooovies here. I will remember that water bears don't care about space. It was not difficult in any way. I also liked eating sandwiches and bearitos. I learned many things, such as the saber-tooothed tiger is called a similodon. This program could be improved by getting better lunches.
the end.

Mila's Blog last day

Hey! Today's our last day, and we are writing about what we came here liking and what we left here liking... That doesn't sound right but whatever. And what was difficult.
So, I came here and I really liked biology and now I'm leaving here and I still like biology.
Something difficult was being the youngest. It's difficult because everybody looks at you as the little girl/boy who knows nothing, so thats really difficult. And sometimes they can be a little mean about it but whatever. I had a really good time here.

Seth's Blog Last Day

In the beginning of the camp I came and expected nothing like what I learned is very different. I really enjoyed going into the recording booth because it was nothing like what i had ever done before and it was really great. I also like being able to help edit even though I didn't want to but it was fun when I recorded and edited my own video. It was really awesome. Another thing that I liked was being able to explore the academy whether  it was on my own time after camp had ended or when they had us go and explore it on our own time or go and record it and edit it was really fun and I really really enjoyed this camp.

Harry's Last Post

We are blogging really early today. We are supposed to write about our favorite and least favorite things in the camp. My favorite thing was seeing (and though some people think I'm weird *coughsethcough* smelling) a giant dead marlin. My least favorite thing was the hours. I think the hours should be 5:00 PM to 5:01 PM (on the same day).

Harry's Blog day 8

I was assigned to copy some of the comments that we got on our video.
So, here I go!

Molly Michelson said:

Instead of saying that the sailfish can be 3 1/2 meters show it by putting a size comparison drawing or something.

Roberta Brett said:

Do a VO transition where the interviewee talking about the body shape part is

Alex's Blog Day 8

The interns gave us advice about how to make our movie better:

really good job putting circles around the body parts
put subtitles with important parts
make things flow better
Vertical lines on sailfish
another pic of longline fishing
Happy pic at end for hope of sailfish life
too much info?
Blank time of photos and music alone

Sarah's Blog Day 8

Some major changes we made to our video was adding the narration. We also added more important pictures and we added subtitles to numbers we said. We added a title, credits at the end and a special thanks to the academy.

Seth's Blog Day 8

Today our group recorded the voice over and i was the one being recorded. It was really cool and I had never recorded something like that before. We also got to play around and i was playing around and was talking in an australian accent and it was really funny. I liked it. Today we also added the narration to the video.

Harry's Blog Post Day 7

Harry again! I chose the music for my group. I chose a song that began soft and rose with more and more instruments being added periodically because it sounded very fast and oceany

DAY 7
some facts about pollution.
I am the researcher in my group.

  • Millions of gallons of sewage are released into the ocean
  • Plastic can get into the water from sewage drains and kill fish by having them eat it and choke.
  • Fishing nets that are discarded can tangle fish and kill them.
  • People can get injured or infected by swimming in polluted water
  • Approximately 1.4 billion pounds of trash per year enters the ocean
  • Many people dump toxic products (paint) into the sewer; it kills fish and pollutes the ocean
  • Each year, millions of dollars are spent to restore and protect areas damaged or endangered by nonpoint source pollutants.
  • GET SEAFOOD WATCH ON YOUR ANDROID OR iPHONE NOW! (not really a fact...)
  • You can use plastic to make artwork.
  • Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land.
  • The Pacific Garbage Patch is twice as large as Texas!
  • CO2  is getting into the ocean and messing up animals metabolism
    a picture.

Alex Day 7

Our movie is about the sailfish and it is coming along great.
We have plenty of facts about how the sailfish moves quickly through the water with its fusiform body shape and its retractible fin.  We also talk about how the sailfish can change their color according to their mood.  These are two facts that we put in our movie.

DAY SEVEN mila :3

So, today we were working on our videos and i do the script...
THE END!

MILA

Sarah's Blog Day 7

Our movie is almost done. The narrating part is not done. We need to make space for Seth's narrating and put the pictures in. We need to edit out some of Marisa's umms. We need a title for our movie.

Seth's Blog Day 7

The script is almost ready. We just need to touch up on what the narrator is going to say but besides that the script is almost done. The video so far is just about 3 minutes and we are going to be good once the script is completely ready.

Day 7 Blog, Kyle

So I have did most of the rough cut and I'm trying to get some of the audio to work and yeah.

Playing with Animation and Dialogues

One of the fun activities we had the Built for Speed Summer Campers do was create their own short animated videos using a web-based tool called Xtranormal. We didn't really prepare them in any way for how to use the software, since we thought it might be a good opportunity to see how they picked up new technologies and learned something new without much guidance.

While not all of their videos were Oscar material, we though it was interesting to see what they made.

Here are a couple of neat examples of what they created:

Mila: Day 5

Hey! Here are three things I learned:
- I learned about the different shots we can do on a camera
- I learned how to use iMovie
- I learned about what kinds of things people who work here have to do (watching animals)

I'm excited to edit or movie on iMovie!

Today we had to find videos that showed emotion.  Either funny, encouraging, or sad, I was a signed to find an encouraging video. This video was encouraging to me because this man has no limbs except his head and is still being happy and independent.

Students respond to the prompts:

  1. Why are you interested in this program?
  2. What flavor of science are you most interested in?
